Variety - the Children's Charity of Alberta Association
Variety-the Children's Charity of Alberta (Variety Alberta) was formed in Calgary Alberta in 1982 to help Alberta’s disabled children and their families meet the challenges that they were facing. The founding team was headed by the infamous broadcaster, Ed Whalen, his wife Nomi, and an amazing group of philanthropic community members. Colleen Klein, children's advocate was one of the early supporters of Variety. For the past 35 years, Variety Alberta has raised millions of dollars to provide funding and specialized services that directly support families with children who have disabilities or facing life threatening illnesses, as well as funding local grassroots organizations that deliver care and services to these children throughout our province. During this time, Variety has provided funding for modified wheelchair accessible vans, assistive learning devices, medical equipment, modified bicycles and supported dozens of organizations that were serving families that needed support.
Some of the community projects Variety Alberta funded during this time included Rockyview Special Care Nursery, Foothills children’s limb bank and Variety Park. Variety Alberta is an Alberta-wide organization and the families and organizations supported cover the entire province. Currently, the focus is on community projects that will impact the larger community. One such service is their Accessibility Enhancement Initiative, where Variety is working with communities to build accessible and inclusive parks throughout Alberta that encourages interactive play and invites children otherwise restricted to the sidelines to engage and play with their peers.
Variety believes that everyone has the right to be accepted for who they are and regardless of their ability, has the right to play. Variety Alberta is creating inclusive and accessible play spaces that supports the growth and development of children with specialized needs to gain greater independence and positive life experiences.
