8 fundraising tips every Birdies for Kids charity should know
In 2016, Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink helped 113 youth-serving Alberta charities raise $3.7 million.
In 2016, more than 90 Alberta’s Promise agency partners were accepted into the Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink fundraising program, a key component of the annual Shaw Charity Classic golf tournament. Those agencies, along with other Alberta-based charities, raised an astounding $3.7 million through the program, which gives youth-serving charities the opportunity to solicit donations and receive additional funding of up to 50%.
This year, more than 100 Alberta’s Promise agency partners have been accepted into the program, and many are already capitalizing on the opportunity. Alberta’s Promise partner Making Changes, for example, recently raised $20,000 – soon to become $30,000 thanks to 50% matching from Birdies for Kids – through a wine survivor fundraiser in support of two of their programs: the Walk-In Closet and My Best Friend’s Closet.
To help all participating charities make the most their involvement with this one-of-a-kind matching program, we have partnered with Shaw Charity Classic to provide 8 fundraising tips that every Birdies for Kids charity should know:
TIP #1: Just talk about it
Speak openly with companies, individuals, and community groups about the benefits of giving through Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink. Communicating that 100% of their donation, along with up to a 50% match, will go directly to you will increase donor support. Donors need to know they are making a greater impact.
TIP #2: Partner with a company
Partnering with a corporate organization to implement a fundraising event for their office team, such as “wear jeans to work day,” is an engaging and fun way to build relationships as well as leverage the matching dollars available within Birdies for Kids.
TIP #3: Host a silent auction
Silent auctions are a great initiative to help raise funds for Birdies for Kids. To increase bids and encourage donations, include communicative pieces such as Birdies for Kids posters and manual pledge forms throughout the event to emphasize how far each donation can go.
TIP #4: Engage golf fans
The Shaw Charity Classic offers each Birdies for Kids charity four general admission tickets that can be used in draws or giveaways as an incentive for donations. Further tickets are available for purchase through the Shaw Charity Classic website at shawcharityclassic.com/tickets
Use discount code BIRDIES2017 to save on select ticket types.
TIP #5: Boost existing events
Are you already planning an upcoming event such as a run, bottle drive, golf tournament, or Stampede breakfast? Include the Birdies for Kids logo on registration forms and other print collateral for your event and put all event proceeds through the program!
TIP #6: Use your golf tourney
Hosting an upcoming golf tournament? Selling mulligans or entries into contests during the tournament is a great way to incorporate Birdies for Kids into the event.
TIP #7: Get social
Get the word out fast by leveraging your social media accounts to inform people about Birdies for Kids. Phrases such as “Matched up to 50%!” or “Make your donation go even further!” are great incentives for donors to learn more.
TIP #8: Spice up your email sig
An email signature including a blurb or photo is a great way to notify your donor base about your participation in Birdies for Kids. You could even link a photo to the Birdies for Kids donation page for an easy follow along for donors!
Ready to make the most of your involvement with Birdies for Kids? Get started – and be sure to let us know how it goes! We’d love to hear what’s working for your organization.
